A Message from Joseph

Thank you for your interest after the show! The rack rates have changed since the hotel inspectors visit and the carpet with the coffee stain has been changed. The towels have and will continue to remain on the bed. The flowers in the bridal suite, they are the best thing I have ever done for the hotel, out of a choice of four, 100% of brides choose this room for their wedding night. Anybody who wishes to visit is welcome to come along for a drink and a tour of the hotel.

Named after Lady Astor, the Astor Hotel Plymouth is an old Victorian hotel dating back to the 18th century and was originally the home of a ship captain.

The name Astor derives from the famous Astor family from Virginia in the USA. Nancy Witcher Langhorne, Lady Astor (1879-1964), was the first woman member of Parliament to take a seat in the House of Commons, when she succeeded her husband in the constituency of Plymouth in November 1919. Lady Astor remained in parliament until 1945, as an active champion of women’s rights, educational issues, and temperance.

On special occasions in Plymouth, the Lady Mayoress has worn the famous Astor Diamonds which were donated to the City of Plymouth by Lady Astor.

Of course Plymouth itself is steeped in history. Whilst staying with us, don’t miss a walk along the Hoe. You’ll enjoy the fresh sea air and panoramic sea views as you descend to the historical Barbican area. Here you stand at the top of the famous Mayflower Steps from where the Pilgrim Fathers set sail for America in 1662, you can almost picture the scene and feel the emotion of the brave sailors as they set off on their fateful journey. You can take a ferry ride from the same spot and view the city of Plymouth as they would have seen it as they sailed away.
